Tour 1
seven temples to enlightenment
“the birth of the hindu bali”

This is an exclusive tour through seven world heritage temples and monuments that trace the creation of the Balinese Hindu religion “Hindu Darma” from the 8th Century to the 12th Century where three religions finally became one.

Modern day Bali Hinduism evolved over centuries and is a mixture of Buddhism, Hinduism mixed with the influences of the Javanese empire. Your journey through seven temples of enlightenment will take you back to the very beginning as we trace the evolution of the this amazing and unique culture that has influenced an entire Nation.

The temples and meditation places we visit are closed to tourism and so are seldom frequented by locals let alone visitors and many are world heritage listed. This is a very special opportunity to be one of the first visitors to touch and help preserve part of the Pakerisan world heritage listed area, an important part of a unique cultures history.

Our day begins with a short lecture at the private house of Bapak Anong Ishmail the Curator of the Sukarno museum and the leading expert on the recently World Heritage listed Pakerisan River area and its ancient temples and monuments.

His simple house sits amongst the rice fields on a ridge to the sacred river of Pakerisan; it’s a beautiful place to start our day. Anong’s life passion is give back to the country that he loves and through his work documenting the Balinese culture since 1979, he now would like to share his findings to help preserve the temples and monuments you will visit for future generations to enjoy.

We will take you back through time as Bapak Anong and his team with our expert guides will lead you through “seven temples and meditation sites” rarely seen by tourists or Balinese.

The temples, dating back to the 8th Century and up to the 12th Century are basically untouched, only the weather has changed their appearance. These temples have played a significant role in the development of present day Balinese culture, for those who enjoy history and culture they are something very special to visit.

We will start at the first temple built in Bali after Besakih, in the 8th Century, continue to a temple that is both Buddhist and Hindu built in the 10th Century and still used today where we will have lunch prepared for us in the rice fields.

In the afternoon we will make our way to an ancient meditation site hidden in the rainforests and carved out of the stone walls basically untouched since the 10th Century. Here we will be met by a local priest who will conduct a blessing ceremony for us to wish you luck on your onward journeys in life.

The day finishes in a large temple where in the 12th Century that the leaders of the Buddhist, Hindu Shiva and “respect your ancestor” religions met and agreed to create one religion for all Hindu Darma or Balinese Hindu.

Very few tourists have been allowed to enter this area, through our association with Bapak Anong Ismail and his position within the Sukarno centre, the relationship with the local villages we have been entrusted to bring very limited numbers of visitors to this important place in history.

We wish to preserve and sustain this key element of Balinese history and believe to do this we must share its story with Balinese and tourists alike.
We have worked with a leading world expert on sustainable tourism to ensure that our only impact is the preservation of the temples and that the villages surrounding directly benefit by your choice to visit included in your tour fee is a donation that goes directly to the restoration of the temple’s.

TOUR 2

crater of life
“a cycling, walking, boating adventure”

We travel to a village that is far removed from the average Balinese way of life with a history that dates back over 1,000 years.
We first travel through Bali to Kintamani and down into the volcano crater to the shores of Mt Batur.

Here we will be met by our cycling guides where we will take an easy cycle around the edge of Lake Batur to the village of Trunyan. Lake Batur is one of the main food bowls to Bali, the rich volcanic soil allows the growing of many vegetables including corn, and cabbage.

On arrival at Trunyan village which was founded over 1,000 years ago and is unique in many ways not just for Bali but worldwide as it is here that the people don’t actually bury the dead.
On arrival at Trunyan we will go for a short walk around the village until we come to a small jetty where our boat awaits.

The small boat will take us around 100metres from the village to a large sandalwood tree; here is where the village lays the bodies of the deceased under the giant sandalwood tree. The story behind this tradition is that only married people can be treated this way and there can only be 11 bodies at any one time at this site. It is a very interesting insight into a culture far removed from our own and that little has changed for over 1,000 years. There is no smell or gruesome sights just a fascinating glimpse and a very unique culture and practice.

We depart from the sandalwood tree and travel by boat across the lake to a floating restaurant for lunch.
After lunch we will return to your villa.

This is one of our favourite days as it combines something for everyone in the Family.

Bali Zoo is very close the beach areas just a 45 minute driver and then only 15 mins from the Zoo to Ubud making it an easy day with children in cars not wondering how long it will take to get there.
The Bali Zoo opened in 2002 as the island’s first and only Balinese-owned zoological park, which still holds true today. We are situated on 22 acres of lush landscape in the art village of Singapadu and are home to a diverse collection of more than 350 exotic animals a majority of which are indigenous to Indonesia, including rare and endangered species such as the Sumatran Elephant, Sumatran Tiger, Orangutan, Sun Bear and Binturong. The animals reside in hundreds of quality built eco-habitats and are well cared by our friendly staff of 170 who work as part of our extended zoo family.
Privately owned but with a real passion for animals in recent years consultants from world renowned Taronga Park Zoo in Sydney Australia have been used to help create a better environment for animals and visitors. The Zoo was created foremost out of his love for animals followed by a desire to conserve and protect various Indonesian fauna and a wish to provide the public with means to share in this wonderful experience for locals and tourists alike. All within a well designed space of natural beauty that is also distinctly Balinese.
Bali Zoo offers a number of unique and one-of-a kind experiences during your visit with us. From our beautifully landscaped and shaded garden paths that lead you through our park to our various ‘hands on’ animal encounter sessions where you are allowed to feed, pet and take photos with number of our zoo inhabitants to our assorted family activities such as our Elephant Back Safari, Bali Zoo is not only a place to observe, learn and marvel at exotic fauna, but also engage with them through our safely supervised activities scheduled throughout the day and night. This is all part of our commitment to conservation, research, education and recreation.
We definitely recommend here that you pre- book the Long Elephant trek and if you really love Elephants then the “ Live like A mahout Program” is definitely not to be missed.
